Web 2.0 & Technological Convergence

Technological convergence allows audiences to access media content from multiple platforms on one device.

A black box is a device that provides us with all of our informational and media requirements (e.g. a smartphone).

Web 2.0 (New Digital Media):

• The dot.com boom (1998-2001) was a huge rise in the number of internet-based companies 

• There was a shift from web 1.0 to 2.0

• Allows users to interact/collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators (prosumers) of user-generated content

• Mobile phones enhance social connections that have always existed

Social networking is a quicker form of communication that enables users to instantly communicate and share media, as opposed to more ancient forms of networking that would take several minutes to days. 

Simulcasting is when a product is broadcasted both online and via traditional medium at the same time. For example, the news is aired on TV, appps and websites as well as on printed copies.

LoveFilm:

• Were a UK-based provider of DVD-by-mail and sreaming on demand

• Acquired by Amazon in 2011 - reached 2 million subscribers

• In 2014 LoveFilm was made only available online

• In August, 2017 Amazon announced that LoveFilm would end on the 31st December

Narrowcast Channels are tv channels that air special interest shows (niche) and only air one genre of tv

Below-the-line advertising is the distribution of leaflets, stickers and other hand held promotions. Billboards and banners are also apart of below-the-line advertiment.
